Hi, my name is

Gregory Standerfer.

I design and scale distributed systems.

Senior Software Development Engineer with 15+ years building high-availability backend and full-stack systems — most recently a decade at Amazon, before that at Microsoft. I take systems from greenfield architecture to production launch and long-term operational excellence. Based in San Diego, CA.

01. About me

I'm a developer based in San Diego, CA who loves building things that solve real problems at scale. Over 15+ years I've owned systems end-to-end — from greenfield architecture to launch, and through the long tail of keeping them reliable in production.

At Amazon I spent a decade in Middle Mile Transportation, where I led the redesign of a legacy scheduling platform into five production services that schedule hundreds of thousands of truck lanes weekly across NA, EU, FE, and CN. I built multi-source ingestion pipelines and real-time forecasting models, and as an on-call leader I drove root-cause analysis that cut ticket volume from 100+ down to 17 and saved over $10M in a single year.

Before Amazon I was at Microsoft, shipping input-control features in C++/COM for Internet Explorer across Windows 8, 8.1, and 10. These days I work closely with AI-assisted development — Claude, MCP server agents, and modern agentic tooling. I care about code that's readable, reliable, and genuinely useful to the people who depend on it.

A few things I work with:

  • Java & Spring
  • Python · NumPy / Pandas
  • AWS (S3, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS, CDK)
  • Distributed & multi-region systems
  • Data pipelines with full CI/CD
  • Real-time forecasting models
  • JavaScript / HTML5
  • AI agents & MCP servers

02. Where I've worked

  1. Software Development Engineer 3 (L6)

    2015 – 2026

Amazon — Middle Mile Transportation, Campus & Video Direct

    • Owned the redesign of a legacy scheduling platform into 5 production services, scheduling several hundred thousand lanes weekly across multiple regions.
    • Designed multi-system, multi-source ingestion pipelines and real-time forecasting models integrated with live scheduling.
    • Led operational-excellence initiatives that saved $10M+ in one year and cut on-call tickets from 100+ to 17.
    • Top on-call responder for Sev-2 systems; mentored engineers and influenced design across teams.
  2. Software Development Engineer 1

    2011 – 2015

    Microsoft — Internet Explorer

    • Designed, built, and maintained input-control features in C++ with COM.

04. Beyond the code

When I'm not shipping systems you'll usually find me outside — running races, on the sand, or exploring San Diego.

05. Get in touch

Have a project in mind, an interesting problem to solve, or just want to say hello? The fastest way to reach me is by email — I'd love to hear from you.
